Ingredients

For the Beef Donburi
  • 1 lb beef (sirloin or flank steak) thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cooked rice white, brown, or sushi rice
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh shiso leaves finely chopped
  • 2 green onions sliced
Optional Garnish
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Skillet

Method

  1. Step 1: Start by heating the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once it's hot, add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  2. Step 2: Next, toss in the thinly sliced beef. Cook it until browned, which should take about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Once combined, pour this mixture over the cooked beef and stir well to coat everything evenly. Let it cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Now, stir in the chopped shiso leaves and remove the skillet from heat.
  5. Step 5: To serve, scoop the cooked rice into bowls and top each with the beef mixture. Garnish with the sliced green onions and sesame seeds if you're feeling fancy.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or broth to keep it moist!
